It actually makes a whole lot of sense that the cottonmouths would appear a lot thinner than your basic control test because of the fact that your blood's not coagulating this keeps your blood from sealing the wound so Nothing Stops the bleed out

I encountered a water moccasin on a trail before in Georgia my dad immediately saw it and screamed for me to walk back if I didn’t hear him scream I would’ve been right next the snake and probably would’ve been bitten.
